Si trovavano sull'isola, tra l'altro, un ippopotamo pigmeo, un lemure gigante, o " Megaladapis ", delle dimensioni di un gorilla , un fossa delle dimensioni di un leopardo , un "uccello elefante" Aepyornis maximus simile allo struzzo e una tartaruga gigante.

Fra le altre specie animali presenti sull'isola si possono citare i coccodrilli e sessanta specie di serpenti nessuno dei quali pericoloso per l'uomo , tra cui tre specie diverse di boa.

Anche i fondali marini sono ricchi di pesci, coralli e piante marine, sia al sud soprattutto nella barriera corallina a sudovest, fra Anakao e Morombe che al nord nella zona di Nosy Be.

Al largo dell'isola di Sainte-Marie transitano stagionalmente le balene. La musica malgascia risente del sincretismo e del multiculturalismo del Madagascar; vi si riconoscono elementi provenienti dalla tradizione francese , araba e africana specialmente sudafricana , keniota , congolese.
